another nyc crochet soiree

Is it just me, or is crochet really hitting the cultural scene lately? In addition to this upcoming hooky dance performance, next month NYC's Natural History Museum will host a crochet /coral evening, replete with a discussion of the plight of coral reefs and the craft of crochet hyperbolic coral reefs. (Craft meets science again! I love it!)

For those of you who are not crochet geeks, basically there's some kind of mathematical formula which, if you crochet it, becomes a hyperbolic plane, but which also occurs in nature form of coral. Ha, or something like that! (If anyone can provide a real explanation of this phenomenon, please post in in the comments!)

The event is next Tuesday, April 8 at 8:30. Click here for tix - say hi if you're there and you see me!

I'm excited to go to this event because I just visited the Natural History Museum about a month ago, and I was so struck by its old-school craftiness. I loved all the old dioramas, and the charmingly outdated handmade displays, and all the wood paneling which has come full-circle and is now all trendy in the DIY/craft world. The museum is a gorgeous old stone castle-like structure in the middle of the city. It is truly of another era. They are slowly renovating the museum and I know that all these great old displays will eventually give way to flashy digital flat-screen thingamajigs, which will be sad. It will be fun to spend an evening talking craft among all that craftiness, while it's still there.
