birthday cake, from me to me

This week, I did something I've never done before: I baked myself a birthday cake!

It suddenly dawned on me that I've baked a bazillion cakes for everyone else, but have never made one for myself. And that just didn't seem right.

And then, even weirder, I realized that I had no idea what my favorite kind of cake is. Who am I??

After a lot of deep thought, I decided that when it comes to birthdays, my favorite cakes are classic and simple. So I made this coconut cake from Bon Appetit (the cake recipe only, not the frosting, and for me it made 3 lovely 9" layers, not 2 as the recipe says). And frosted it with my very favorite butter cream, which I will tell you all about someday in another post.

It felt good to make myself a cake! I think I feel a new tradition coming on.

What about you, do you do anything special for yourself on your birthday? Do tell.

Happy birthday cake! (that's what my nephew says, he knows what the best part is). You're right, it's so nice to do things for ourselves, why don't we all do that more often?

Happy Birthday, Brett! My husband's birthday was on February 10th. We usually go out to dinner on our birthdays. We have a favorite restaurant that we always go to. I like to make cakes for our birthdays, too. I like the classics also. I just love chocolate cake. Your cake looks beautiful and delicious! Enjoy!

Happy Birthday! What a beautiful cake. I love this tradition of baking yourself a cake. I think I may adopt it as my own. Love your table covering too. Doesn't IKEA have the best fabrics at great prices.

Hey Brett,
I'm so glad to have your blog to check in on, since my PBS station no longer shows Knit and Crochet today reruns daily. I'm also a recent birthday girl and finally have my blog up. Hope to see you on the tube again, but I can't find Knit and Crochet Now anywhere.

Beautiful birthday cake and I love your jello creations too.

Happy late Birthday! Your cake caused me to lick my computer screen--well almost!! I have a friend who shares my birthdate, although she is 40+ years younger than myself. We have a regular plan for each celebration. Olive Garden with soup, salad and breadsticks and THEN HIT EVERY CRAFT SHOP IN A 50-MILE RADIUS!!!

Happy belated birthday--that cake looks so delicious--gotta make it. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us. Please please please come back to to apt-montgomery, al. I was searching and again I see you have left us. We love your show here in alabama--I hope your leaving was just a temporary one and you all are busy making another series--I got one more series of your dvd's to get-the last one. I have made many of your items and have learned so much from your show. I share it with a small crochet group I teach--trying so much to not let this craft become a dying art--please come back???????????? Aquila
