Last night I took a little trip out to Brooklyn to attend a very cool film screening called No Idle Hands. Curated by Sabrina Gschwandter, the author of the book KnitKnit, it was a collection of several short films showcasing crafts in a variety of ways. The screening ended with a preview of the highly-anticipated upcoming movie Handmade Nation, Faythe Levine's documentary about the rise of the new craft/DIY movement in the US. Faythe has been working on the film for a while now, interviewing crafty people from coast to coast, and I have been dying to get a peek at the product. The preview featured interviews with several big crafty players, including embroidery queen (and one of my idols) Jenny Hart, crafty pioneer Susan Beal, and Stephanie Syjuco of anti-factory, just to name a few.
The clip opened with a supercool fast-forward sequence of Faythe stitching the entire motif above. On her blog she talks about the process of embroidering that entire piece in one sitting for the camera. (Man, do I feel her pain on that one!)
A big congrats to Faythe for pulling off this amazing project. Here's hoping her film will get great distribution so we can all check it out. Those of you in the LA area can help the cause by attending a silent auction to benefit the film on July 19. And anyone can donate by visiting Faythe's blog.
